Clarinet Ensemble

Wendell Harrison
& Mama's Licking Stick Clarinet Ensemble
This eloquent ensemble was established in 1989 expresses the rare sounds of wooden clarinets. The ensemble includes each member of the clarinet family; soprano Eflat, Bflat, alto, bass and contra bass clarinets plus rhythm section. Mama's Licking Stick has two recorded releases to date; RUSH & HUSTLE on Enja Records and LIVE IN CONCERT on Wenha Music
• "That noble wooden instrument, the clarinet has a few heroes these days. Buddy DeFranco, Eddie Daniels, Alvin Batiste, the late John Carter, and Don Byron are integrating it into the contemporary language of improvised music., Add to that list Detroiter Wendell Harrison."
Michael G. Nastos - DOWNBEAT

•"Wendell Harrison's RUSH & HUSTLE is something new under the sun."
Thomas Conrad - DOWNBEAT

•"Wendell Harrison is a composer , author, and educator as well as a skilled and versatile woodwind player." Tom Jacobson - JAZZ TIMES

•"Since the swing era, there have been precious few clarinetists in jazz generally, and particularly among those embracing the styles of the post-bop period. John Carter, Perry Robinson, and Alvin Batiste, yes, but who else? Wendell Harrison for one". Bart Grooms - OPTION

•"Although he's a fluent saxophonist, the striking element of Harrison's talent is his mastery of the clarinet. Eddie Daniels and Buddy DeFranco are probably the most appropriate comparisons." Paul Baker - THE JAZZ JOURNAL LOS ANGELES

Pianist and composer Pamela Wise will take you on a caliente ride to Cuba with her ensemble. Utilizing traditional Afro Cuban and fusing them with Jazz harmonies will keep your feet dancing throughout the performance. Pamela has three CD's to date; Songo Festividad, Negre Con Leche and Pamela's Club
"Wise, an assured bop pianist with a Tyneresque (as in McCoy Tyner) touch, composes strong melodies and braces them with the simmering rhythms of the Afro-Cuban tradition."
Dan Ouellette-Downbeat Magazine

"Pamela Wise’s SONGO FESTIVIDAD is a perfect example of the current trends in Latin jazz. She has written some innovative songs that draw from the influence of Tito Rodriguez and Machito, while the playing of all concerned has the energy of the Fania All Stars."
Leonard J. Bukowski-Cadance Magazine
